Work. ...and Play!!

Today in Horticulture Rachel and I planted some Day Lilies, Torch Lilies, Canna Lilies. We also helped Nate and Kody plant Irises. I checked on my Pepper plants and they need to go the weekend without watering, because they are suffering from over watering. However, they should be perking back up soon. My radishes are growing really well. They've already started growing a red bulb. They look really good.

Here's some photo's of what's going on in Horticulture...

Here's one of my many radishes!! They look AWESOME!!!

Here's my pepper plants.

Here's Rachel standing idly with the Day, Canna, and Torch Lilies.

Dirt....and more dirt.

This week Kirstie and I planted Day Lilies, Canna Lilies, and Torch Lilies. We had tones of them! Next week we will continue planting Day Lilies and Torch Lilies since we still have an abundance of them! The lettuce that Kaylyn and I are growing is doing great, and we really want to eat it! This week was really busy, and next week will probably be more busy since it is a short week.
Yet another long week at CCS. This week was testing, so our schedule was slightly altered. It was a unusually strenuous week, as Jake and I spent one whole period lugging five gallon buckets full of water to resupply the water barrel in our newly complete greenhouse. My broccoli is looking fantastic. It was doing pretty rough the last couple of weeks, and although there is still some discoloration, it looks and feels much healthier. My broccoli is located in the hot bed beneath the oak tree. This Monday I noticed little black specks all over my leaves. This I later found out were inch worm droppings from the tree above. Some of the worms will land on the plants now and then, but they cause almost no damage. Broccoli is up for sale this week, so any and all interested in buying, don't stop to come on by. In addition to tending to the broccoli, several other students and I have been planting red hot poker, irises, cannus, and day lilies in front of the greenhouse in order to make our area beautiful and lush.

Kody and I had a productive week. We began our air layering project and it is now completed. We are just watching a waiting for roots to sprout. We also started some water graphting with wild blackberry trimmings. Most importantly in all of my spare time i searched for preying mantis egg sacks for the greenhouse/gardens at ccs and my home.
The compost pile is doing really well, but I think we should add another load of leaves to it and turn it once again. The cucumber plant is also looking very healthy, and I hope we can get some cucumbers off of that before school is out, but school will be out in about month, so I don't know if that is possible. I can't tell how the potted irises are doing... I will have to wait awhile to see, but so far it looks like they are doing pretty well. Hopefully in given time they will be looking beautiful!
So this week my lettuce is growing to be so big, but my tomato plants are still looking like they are going to die. They keep growing big and green, but the leaves will then start to yellow. I looked on the internet to see if anything could help me figure out why my tomato plants are turning yellow and I think it's because of some fungus that they picked up. I noticed that Luke hasn't used the new soil that Mr. Hardin bought for us to transplant and his tomato plants are doing fine, but my tomato plants are planted in the new soil and keep getting yellow. Maybe the tomato plants aren't getting enough nutrients from the soil, or they have some kind of fungus. I'm still not sure what is wrong but hopefully they will improve soon.
Over the past week, I have been working on the finishing touches to the greenhouse. Gravel has been laid down as a flooring for the building. Also the work benches for one side of the green house has been finished and I will hopefully finish the other side today. Finally the potatoes are doing amazing despite the three frosts that managed to hit it because we did not cover the barrel.

Good News!!

These pictures are the plants that were doing bad a couple of weeks ago but now they are doing great. We are about to sell our plants so that is good. Right above is the picture of my starter plants that Jasmine and I planted last week. They grew really fast and we are also expecting to sell those soon:)

Plant Prices

We are now selling our plants!

The prices for what we are selling are as follows:
Broccoli - $1.50
Assorted peppers - $2.00-$2.50
Coleus - $1.50
Cauliflower - $2.00
Tomatoes - $2.00-$3.00
Wave Petunias - $2.00-$2.50

Come and check it out!

Here's a picture of Michelle watering our unidentified grass. It looks much better now that I covered the dirt with a nice, rich top soil that should help hold in moisture. ~Lindsey

We need more gravel to finish the bed of the greenhouse

This is luke and my (kody's) creation. we are baking a potato ...just kidding. we are trying a process called air layering on this tree to see if it would make it easier to graft. so then we can have a tree!

The Norm :]

So Emily, Grace, and I have been SUPER busy!! Grace and I with our wave petunias (which are going up so fast and are looking gorgeous!), Emily with her peppers, and then our three common projects: the compost, cucumbers, and irises. Everyday, we collect all the compost buckets that are placed both in the teacher's lounge and the cafeteria. The lower schoolers and the faculty members are doing a most wonderful job with helping us out!! Thanks so much!! :D We put all the items in the compost bin and some days we turn the compost while other days we water or do both. Then while Emily checks on her peppers, Grace and I check on our wave petunias. This all may not sound like a lot, but trust us it is a TON of work; tiring, but very fulfilling. :) Our newest edition to our work are the irises. We didn't grow them from a bulb like usual, but we received them as full plants to clean, cut, and then transplant into little gardening pots. All this work is very exciting!! The wave petunias are getting bigger and the compost pile is growing taller everyday. Can't wait to actually see our flowers bloom, compost begin fully decomposing, and the cucumber plant get somewhere over 2 inches tall!! :D

:)

Last week, Grace, Chloe, and I took care of our compost pile as usual, but we have also taken on a few other projects. Composting is one, then there are the irises, and our cucumber plant, which has just sprouted, in the garden by the greenhouse. We have successfully transplanted numerous irises into pots, so they will be easy to sell. We still have to research the price, but are thinking about selling them for $2 each, and most of the iris plants are well established, so I think that is a fair price. Kirstie and I also have peppers to take care of, which we have been over watering, but besides that they are healthy, and will probably perk back up in a few days...I am looking forward to that!

Here is a picture of mine and Michelle's lettuce! It's looking good! The only problem we're having is telling the difference between the lettuce and weeds. ~Lindsey

Our plants!!!

So Emily, Chloe and I have kept busy with our compost project (which has been doing excellent!), and taking care of all of our plants, including two new additions! Emily has been working hard on her peppers with Kirstie, Chloe and I have been taking care of our Wave Petunias which are growing SO fast, and all three of us have planted a cucumber and some irises. We planted just one cucumber outside (one plant will produce many cucumbers) and yesterday we finally saw it had sprouted!! Also yesterday we finished potting the irises, our newest plant additions. We didn't have them as seedlings, but as full grown plants, so we had to clean, cut, and separate each of them which took some time, but now we're finished and they look nice. I can not wait for our Irises and Wave Petunias to start budding flowers!!!! =)

Our plants are growing so well in the green house!

Finally a new post.

Well its been a while since I posted so I hope I catch up with everything. The salvias have been replanted and are now grown to nice sizes. They reached a size where we can almost sell them. The greenhouse which we have been working on for a long time is finally usable. All we need to do is put down gravel on the bottom and we're good to go. The benches needed for our green house are now all in stock also and all the plants have been moved from Mr. Hardin's room to outside. The hot bed is now being used as garden space for the squash that I just planted, and although they haven't sprouted yet it seems that they are doing just fine. I didn't plant the squash in just a hot bed though, i planted one of them in an old tire full of soil just to see how it would do. Unfortunately it dries out very fast, but it should be fine. Finally I'll talk about the potatoes. They are growing at a fast steady rate. One is doing amazing while the other is holding the rest back. The other two are about the same, just chilling in the middle.

Last week in Horticulture Kaylyn and I planted an unknown plant. I also cut some of my radishes and transplanted them over to another flower box. The pepper plants are growing well. Emily and I discovered some fungus in two of them. So we monitored their grow with other plants the same size that weren't infected. They are doing splendidly and do not seem to be harmed from the fungus. I have come back from the weekend to discover that my radishes have grown a lot. Pictures will be coming soon. Rachel and I are going to plant some Torch Lilies and another type of flower, can't think of the name right now. :)

Water Water Water

So, after a nice weekend in Charleston, I have returned to find my plants have grown at least an inch!  I now have four different kinds of plants to take care of, my Herbs, lettuce, Mondo Grass, and an Ornamental Grass.  I spent a good 10-15 minutes watering all of them today.  I cannot wait to see how much they grow in the next week, hopefully they will grow enough for us to start selling by next week.  Here's to hoping... :)
